RN to BSN in New York

Nursing is in high demand in New York, with approximately 169,820 RNs employed in 2013 and only 19.67 nurses per 1000 jobs. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the average salary for a registered nurse in New York State as of May 2013 was $75,470 and the hourly salary was $36.29. Salary prospects for New York nurses range from $50,700 to $105,050 depending on license and level of education. The best cities for nurses to seek employment, in terms of earning potential, are Bronx, Brooklyn, New York, Queens Village and Staten Island.

A recent report from the Institute of Medicine called for 80% of registered nurses (RNs) to receive a Bachelor of Science (BSN) degree by the year 2020. Opportunities for RNs are expected to increase 26% in this same time period. Oftentimes, a bachelor’s degree or higher is necessary for administrative positions, research, consulting and teaching.
